£25 to £40 an hour, paid every week. That is the range for the locum social workers we place in Stoke-on-Trent and around Staffordshire, and where you land in it comes down to the team and the level of the post.
Senior and management posts
The upper end of that range tends to go with seniority, and we get regular requests for senior practitioners and team managers. If you have been leading a team or carrying the most complex cases for a while, say so when we speak, because those posts come up often. Practitioners at other levels are just as welcome: the work spans children and families, adult services, mental health, safeguarding and hospital discharge, with local authority and health and social care teams.
What a placement asks of you
You hold cases, carry out assessments and reviews and write up the plans and reports that follow from them. Meetings come with the territory, hearings sometimes, and you will be working alongside families, carers and partner agencies. Records need to meet statutory and legal standards. Supervision and team support are part of every placement, senior or not.
Getting there from where you live
We match people by postcode and commuting time. A Staffordshire post might suit someone living in Stafford, Crewe or Macclesfield, and Telford or Burton Upon Trent are within driving range for some. Contracts run anywhere from a few weeks to beyond six months, and both full time and part time arrangements exist.
The checks
Bring a recognised social work qualification, current Social Work England registration and two years or more since qualifying spent in UK statutory work. You will also need the right to work here, two referees from recent employment and an enhanced DBS registered on the update service, which we can organise if you lack one. A car and licence matter for most community jobs. Child protection, court, adult safeguarding, approved mental health or discharge experience counts in your favour.
