Walking into a team you have never met, with a caseload already waiting, is the part of locum work that puts some social workers off. On the placements we fill in Lisburn and the South Eastern Trust area, you are not left to work it out alone: supervision and team support are in place every time.
Someone to talk cases through with
Each placement gives you a supervisor and colleagues who know the patch. That backing counts, because the work is heavy. You take on your own cases, assess and review, draft the plans and the reports, turn up to meetings and to hearings when they come, and spend a lot of time with families, carers and other organisations. The records you keep are expected to be sound in law and to meet statutory rules.
Where the work is
Our placements in this area are with health and social care teams, and they take in work with children and their families, adults, mental health, safeguarding and patients leaving hospital. We look at your postcode and travel time first. Belfast, Craigavon and Antrim are all near enough to make the commute easy for many, and Ballymena or Newry work for people prepared to drive further. A contract might last a few weeks or carry on beyond six months, with full or part time hours.
Getting registered with us
Your file needs a recognised social work award, registration with NISCC and at least two years in statutory social work in the UK since you qualified. We confirm your right to work here and contact two people who have managed or worked with you lately. If there is no Enhanced AccessNI Disclosure on file, we will arrange one. Community posts mostly need you to drive and to have a car. Court experience, child protection, safeguarding adults, approved mental health practice and discharge planning all help your case, and we are regularly asked for team managers and senior practitioners.
Pay
Somewhere between £25 and £40 an hour, according to the team and the grade, and it is paid weekly.
