When we place a locum social worker in Kent we start from your postcode and how far you are willing to travel, and only then look at which teams need someone.
Where the work sits
The contracts are locum and agency posts with local authority and health and social care teams. Depending on your background that could be children and families, adult services, mental health, safeguarding or hospital discharge. Some bookings last a few weeks while a team covers a gap; others run for six months or longer. Full time and part time arrangements both come up across the county.
A normal week on placement
Expect a caseload of your own. You will complete assessments and reviews, put plans and reports into writing, and sit in meetings or hearings when a case calls for it. Much of the day is spent with families and carers, and with the other agencies involved in a person’s life. Your recording has to stand up to statutory and legal scrutiny. Every placement comes with supervision and a team behind you, so you are not left holding difficult decisions alone.
Before you start
You need a recognised social work qualification, current registration with Social Work England and at least two years of post qualifying practice in a UK statutory setting. We also need proof of your right to work here, two referees who can speak to your recent jobs and an enhanced DBS on the update service. No DBS on the update service yet? We can arrange a new check for you. Most community posts in Kent need a full driving licence and a car, which matters if you are covering anywhere between Whitstable and Sittingbourne.

The rate is £25 to £40 an hour, set by the team and the level of the post, and it lands weekly.
