A locum registrar shift in the Western Trust area looks much like a substantive one, except you decide when it happens and how many you do. From Omagh, we book middle grade doctors anywhere from a single session to a contract running three months or longer.
Procedures and specialty work
Each specialty brings its own practical work, and as a registrar you carry out those procedures within your competence. We place doctors in anaesthetics, psychiatry, paediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, general and acute medicine, and emergency medicine, at district general and major acute sites as well as in urgent care, out of hours, private and community settings.
Senior responsibility
Leading the management of acutely unwell patients is central, as is running the take and reviewing what junior doctors have decided. You supervise and teach, carry the middle grade bleep and liaise with consultants about escalation and admission. Resident on call is only booked when you have said yes to it. You will also have a part in morbidity meetings, governance and departmental safety.
The checklist
We need ST3 level or above, or equivalent middle grade experience, with half a year or more of recent NHS or HSC work behind you. Your GMC registration should be full with a licence to practise, and the right to work in the UK is a must. ALS is required, and ATLS or APLS where your specialty uses them; you should also feel confident leading and supervising out of hours. MRCP, MRCS, MRCEM, FRCA or MRCPsych, or progress towards one, is desirable. We organise the Enhanced AccessNI Disclosure, occupational health, immunisations and references.
Rates and help
Between £55 and £70 an hour, set before you accept and paid each week. Appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training support comes as standard.
