The on call bleep
As middle grade you are the senior decision maker below consultant level, and the bleep reflects it. Calls bring acutely unwell patients to assess and manage, juniors wanting their plans checked, and admission or escalation questions to take to the consultant. You run the take, teach and supervise, and carry out specialty procedures within your competence. There is also governance, morbidity meetings and departmental safety to contribute to.
Specialties and length
Bookings cover emergency medicine, general and acute medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthetics and psychiatry. They run from single shifts to rolling contracts of three months and longer, at major acute and district general hospitals across all five Trusts, and in urgent care, out of hours and private or community settings. You choose the intensity.
Before we put you forward
You need to be at ST3 or above, or have matching middle grade experience, with six months or more of recent NHS or HSC work. Full GMC registration with a licence to practise and the right to work in the UK are essential, and so is ALS, with ATLS or APLS for the specialties that require them. Leading a team out of hours should feel comfortable. Royal College membership or exam progress and resus experience are desirable. Pay and support
Rates are £55 to £70 an hour, confirmed before every booking and paid weekly. We help with appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training.
