This one suits a doctor at SHO level who wants to choose their own work: an ST1, a CT1 or CT2, or someone with equivalent experience who would rather pick sites and specialties than take whatever a rota hands out. We are booking locum SHOs in York and across North Yorkshire, and the city is a realistic commute from Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, Hull and Sheffield.
Where the shifts sit
Demand runs steadily through general medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry. You might spend a week on a surgical ward and the next in an assessment unit or a mental health unit, or stay put in one emergency department on a block. Registrars and consultants are there on every shift.
Your share of the work
Clerking admissions and taking referrals on the acute take, reviewing inpatients and setting up investigations and treatment, doing practical procedures within your competence, and backing up the foundation doctors around you. The on call rota includes nights and weekends, and your records need to stand up clinically and legally.
What you bring, what we arrange
We will ask to see full GMC registration with a licence to practise, your right to work in the UK, at least six months of recent NHS hospital experience, and experience at core training level or equivalent in a relevant specialty. For life support, ALS in date, or ILS if you are happy to update. An enhanced DBS on the update service is ideal; without one, we sort a new check for you. Occupational health clearance, immunisations, two contactable references and an in date appraisal and revalidation complete the file, and we can help with revalidation. Emergency, acute or psychiatric experience counts in your favour, as do MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary progress and ATLS or APLS.
Earnings and contract length
You will earn £45 to £55 an hour, paid weekly, depending on grade, shift and site, and the rate is agreed before you accept. Choose ad hoc shifts, block bookings or a contract of a month or more.
