£45 to £55 an hour, paid every week, with the figure settled before you accept the shift. That is the rate for SHO grade locum work in Wolverhampton and across the Black Country, and where you land in that range comes down to your grade, the shift and the site.
Grades and specialties
The work suits ST1, CT1 and CT2 doctors and anyone with equivalent experience. The steady need is in general medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry. From Walsall, Dudley or West Bromwich the Wolverhampton end of the patch is a short trip, and it is within reach from Birmingham or Telford as well.
On the ward and in the department
Expect SHO level responsibility on medical and surgical wards, in assessment units, emergency departments and mental health units, always with registrar and consultant backup. You will clerk new admissions from the acute take, manage inpatients from first investigation through to the treatment plan, carry out procedures within your competence, keep an eye on foundation doctors, and take your share of nights and weekends on the on call rota. Notes have to hold up to clinical and legal scrutiny.
Before your first booking
Full GMC registration and a licence to practise are essential, along with the right to work in the UK, six months or more of recent NHS hospital work and experience at core training level in a relevant specialty. Bring ALS in date, or ILS and a willingness to update it. If your enhanced DBS is not on the update service we can arrange one, and we gather occupational health clearance, immunisation records and two references with you. Appraisal and revalidation need to be current, and we can support you there. MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary progress, ATLS or APLS, and a background in emergency medicine, acute medicine or psychiatry will all strengthen your file.
