What does a locum SHO shift in Sunderland actually look like? Usually it is a medical or surgical ward, an assessment unit, an emergency department or a mental health unit, with a registrar and a consultant on hand for the whole shift. You clerk admissions and take referrals on the acute take, review inpatients, start investigations and treatment plans, and do the procedures you are competent in. Foundation doctors on shift will look to you for support, and the on call rota includes nights and weekends.
Who we place at this grade
We want SHO grade doctors: ST1, CT1 and CT2 trainees, or doctors with equivalent experience. Work comes up steadily across general medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry in Sunderland and the rest of Tyne and Wear, so if you live in South Shields, Gateshead, Newcastle or North Tyneside, or down towards Durham, you are well placed. Psychiatry, acute medicine or emergency medicine experience helps, as does progress with MRCP Part 1 or the MRCEM Primary, and ATLS or APLS if it fits your specialty.
The checks, and who does them
You need full GMC registration with a licence to practise, the right to work in the UK, at least six months of recent NHS hospital experience and core training level experience in a relevant specialty. Advanced life support should be in date, though immediate life support is fine if you are willing to update. We build the rest of the compliance file with you: an enhanced DBS on the update service (or a new one, which we can arrange), occupational health clearance and immunisations, two references we can actually reach, and appraisal and revalidation in date, which we can help with.
Rates and booking lengths
Pay is £45 to £55 an hour, paid weekly. The exact figure depends on grade, shift and site, and it is agreed with you before you say yes to anything. Take single ad hoc shifts, a block booking, or a locum contract of a month or more. Your consultant at Flamingo knows how specialty rotas work and books you where you want to be.
