Six months of recent NHS or HSC hospital experience is the line we draw for SHO locums. If you have that, a full GMC licence and the right to work in the UK, locum work in Stoke on Trent and around Staffordshire through Flamingo Workforce is well within reach.
Where you stand
We book at SHO grade: ST1, CT1 and CT2 doctors, or doctors with equivalent experience. Alongside the six months and your GMC registration with a licence to practise, you need core training level or equivalent experience in a relevant specialty. If your experience is in emergency medicine, acute medicine or psychiatry, or you have made progress with MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary, that strengthens your options. ATLS or APLS, where relevant to your specialty, does the same.
Remaining checks
ALS in date, or ILS and a willingness to update. Occupational health clearance and immunisations. Two references we can contact. Appraisal and revalidation that are current, which we can support. An enhanced DBS on the update service, which we can arrange for you if needed. We pull the compliance file together so you can start sooner.
Shifts and settings
The demand is steady in general medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry. You might cover a medical or surgical ward, an assessment unit, an emergency department or a mental health unit, always with registrar and consultant support on shift. The work includes the acute take, with referrals to see and admissions to clerk, inpatient review and management, investigations and treatment plans, procedures within your competence and supporting foundation doctors. Nights and weekends fall within the on call rota, and good records, fit for clinical and legal scrutiny, are expected.
Pay, plus a word on travel
The rate is £45 to £55 an hour depending on grade, shift and site. It is agreed before you accept and paid weekly. Book ad hoc dates, blocks or contracts of a month or more. Doctors working Stoke shifts live in Stafford, Crewe, Macclesfield, Telford and Burton Upon Trent, among other places.
