Is your ALS still in date? If it has lapsed, or you only hold ILS, that need not stop you. For locum SHO work in Southampton and around Hampshire, Flamingo Workforce accepts immediate life support from doctors who are willing to update to advanced.
Life support and other certificates
Advanced life support is the standard we look for. ATLS or APLS, where they are relevant to your specialty, are desirable rather than required, and so is progress with Royal College exams such as MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary. Emergency medicine, acute medicine or psychiatry experience also helps.
The essentials
You should hold full GMC registration and a licence to practise and have the right to work in the UK. We look for at least six months of recent hospital experience in the NHS or HSC and core training level or equivalent experience in a relevant specialty. The SHO grade we book covers ST1, CT1 and CT2 doctors and those with equivalent experience. We also need occupational health clearance and immunisations, two contactable references, and appraisal and revalidation in date. An enhanced DBS on the update service is expected; if you do not have one we arrange it, and we look after the other compliance checks too.
On the ward and in ED
General medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry are where steady demand lies, on medical and surgical wards, assessment units, emergency departments and mental health units. Shifts involve clerking admissions and fielding referrals on the acute take, reviewing and managing inpatients, setting up investigations and treatment plans, carrying out procedures within your competence and supporting foundation doctors. You have registrar and consultant support every shift, and you cover nights and weekends on call. Clinical records must stand up to scrutiny, legal as well as clinical.
Pay and patterns
£45 to £55 an hour, agreed before you accept and paid weekly, varying with grade, shift and site. Choose from ad hoc shifts, block bookings and contracts of a month or more. Eastleigh, Winchester, Fareham, Gosport and Portsmouth are all home to doctors who work Southampton shifts.
