Acute medicine and assessment units
Assessment units are one of the settings we book SHOs into, alongside medical and surgical wards, emergency departments and mental health units. General medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry are where demand is steady. If acute medicine is your background, say so, as it is one of the experiences we look for, along with emergency medicine and psychiatry.
Responsibilities on the unit
Taking referrals and clerking admissions on the acute take is the heart of it. You then review and manage those inpatients, get investigations and treatment plans going and do the procedures you are competent in. Foundation doctors will be on with you and need your support, and registrar and consultant support is there on every shift. On call includes nights and weekends, and your notes need to stand up to clinical and legal scrutiny.
Before we can book you
ST1, CT1, CT2 or equivalent experience is the level. Full GMC registration with a licence to practise is essential, and so is the right to work in the UK. We need at least six months of recent NHS or HSC hospital experience and core level experience in a relevant specialty, plus ALS in date or ILS with a willingness to update. Add occupational health clearance and immunisations, two contactable references, an enhanced DBS on the update service and current appraisal and revalidation. We will arrange the DBS if you need it and support revalidation too. MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary, and ATLS or APLS, are nice to have.
Rates, patterns, places
Expect £45 to £55 an hour, paid weekly, with grade, shift and site setting the figure and the rate agreed before you accept. Choose ad hoc shifts, block bookings or contracts of a month or more. Many of our Reading doctors live in Wokingham, Bracknell, Maidenhead, Camberley or Basingstoke.
