Flamingo Workforce
Nights and weekends are part of SHO life, and on Teesside locum work they come with the territory. Flamingo Workforce books SHO grade doctors in Middlesbrough whose on call commitments include out of hours cover, and we pay £45 to £55 an hour for it, weekly, with the rate fixed before you accept.
Working the on call rota
Being on call as an SHO means taking the referrals that arrive, clerking admissions on the acute take and keeping on top of inpatients who need reviewing. You get investigations and treatment plans started, carry out procedures within your competence and keep the foundation doctors on shift supported. A registrar and consultant are there to escalate to on every shift. Records written at four in the morning still need to stand up to clinical and legal scrutiny, so we look for doctors who keep good notes whatever the hour.
Where and what
General medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry are the areas where demand holds steady. That covers medical and surgical wards, assessment units, emergency departments and mental health units. You choose which, and you choose between ad hoc dates, block bookings and contracts of a month or more.
Eligibility for Teesside bookings
We work with ST1, CT1 and CT2 doctors and anyone with equivalent experience. A licence to practise with full GMC registration is required, as is the right to work in the UK. Recent hospital experience matters: six months or more in the NHS or HSC, plus core level experience in a relevant specialty. You need ALS in date, or ILS and willingness to update, occupational health clearance, immunisations and two contactable references. An enhanced DBS on the update service is expected, though we can arrange one, and your appraisal and revalidation should be current, again with our support. Acute medicine, emergency or psychiatry backgrounds and ATLS or APLS are a bonus.
Travel and applying
Doctors on our Middlesbrough bookings come from Hartlepool, Darlington and Durham, and some from as far as Sunderland or Gateshead. Grade, shift and site decide the hourly figure. Apply through the site with your CV and GMC number and we ring you the same working day.
