Emergency medicine first
Emergency medicine is one of the four specialties where demand holds steady, alongside general medicine, surgery and psychiatry. Doctors with ED, acute medicine or psychiatry experience, or with ATLS or APLS, have the widest choice, and progress towards MRCEM Primary or MRCP Part 1 helps too. None of those are a must. If you would rather not be in ED at all, we can book medical or surgical wards, assessment units or mental health units instead.
What the shift asks of you
Seeing referrals and clerking admissions on the acute take, reviewing and managing inpatients, starting investigations and treatment, and doing procedures within your competence. You will support foundation doctors and work with registrar and consultant cover on every shift. The on call rota includes nights and weekends, and notes must be clear enough to survive clinical and legal scrutiny.
The checklist
The grade is SHO, so ST1, CT1, CT2 or equivalent experience. You need full GMC registration with a licence to practise and the right to work in the UK, plus a minimum of six months recent NHS or HSC hospital experience and core level experience in a relevant specialty. Bring ALS in date, or ILS if you will update, along with occupational health clearance and immunisations, two contactable references, an enhanced DBS on the update service and current appraisal and revalidation. We can arrange the DBS and support your revalidation.
Hours and pay
The rate is £45 to £55 an hour, paid weekly, agreed before you accept and dependent on grade, shift and site. Take one off shifts, block bookings or contracts of a month or more. Plenty of the doctors we book here live in Bradford, Wakefield or York, and some travel from Sheffield or Rochdale.
