Nights and weekends are part of SHO locum work in Dundee, because you join the on call rota like any other doctor at your grade. If you are comfortable with that, there is steady work across Tayside and Fife in general medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry.
Is this you
We book ST1, CT1 and CT2 doctors, and doctors with equivalent experience. Dundee is in easy reach of Fife, and Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow are all a drive away, so it works for doctors spread across a wide stretch of Scotland.
Through a shift
Your base could be a medical or surgical ward, an assessment unit, an emergency department or a mental health unit. A registrar and consultant are always there behind you. You take referrals and clerk admissions on the acute take, review and manage inpatients, request investigations and agree treatment plans, do procedures within your competence and support the foundation doctors around you. Notes need to be good enough for clinical and legal scrutiny.
Documents and checks
You must have full GMC registration and a licence to practise, the right to work in the UK, at least six months of recent NHS hospital work and core training level experience, or equivalent, in a relevant specialty. Advanced life support should be in date, though immediate life support is acceptable if you will update. Membership of the PVG scheme is required, and we can arrange it if you are not already a member. We will also need occupational health clearance, immunisations, two references you can be contacted through, and an appraisal and revalidation in date, which we can support. A record in emergency, acute or psychiatric medicine, MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary progress, and ATLS or APLS all strengthen an application.
Money and booking types
Expect £45 to £55 an hour, paid weekly. The rate depends on grade, shift and site, and you agree it before accepting. Book ad hoc shifts, block bookings or a contract of a month or more, choosing sites, shifts and specialties.
