The case for a block
Doctors who take block bookings tell us the second week is easier than the first. You learn the unit, the team learns you, and handovers get quicker. If that appeals, say so and we will look for blocks in general medicine, emergency medicine, surgery or psychiatry, the four areas where demand is steady. If you would rather stay loose with single dates, that works too.
A normal shift
Taking referrals and clerking on the acute take, then reviewing and managing inpatients, setting off investigations and treatment plans and carrying out procedures within your competence. Foundation doctors on shift will lean on you a bit. Registrar and consultant support is there on every shift, and the on call rota includes nights and weekends. Documentation must hold up under clinical and legal scrutiny. Settings include medical and surgical wards, assessment units, emergency departments and mental health units.
Requirements in brief
ST1, CT1 or CT2, or equivalent experience, with full GMC registration, a licence to practise and the right to work in the UK. You should have six months or more of recent NHS or HSC hospital experience and core level experience in a relevant specialty, plus ALS in date or ILS with a willingness to update. We also need occupational health clearance, your immunisations, two contactable references, an enhanced DBS on the update service (we will arrange one if needed) and appraisal and revalidation in date, which we support. Emergency medicine, acute medicine or psychiatry experience, ATLS or APLS, and exam progress such as MRCP Part 1 are all welcome extras.
Pay, travel, next step
£45 to £55 an hour, paid weekly, agreed with you before you accept, and varying with grade, shift and site.
