On shift
You take referrals and clerk patients, review and manage inpatients, and start the investigations and treatment plans they need. Practical procedures are part of it, within your competence. Foundation doctors will look to you for support, and there is a registrar and consultant behind you every shift. Nights and weekends feature on the on call rota, and we expect notes written to stand up to clinical and legal scrutiny.
Specialties and settings
General medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry, across medical and surgical wards, assessment units, emergency departments and mental health units. Grades are ST1, CT1, CT2 or equivalent experience. If you have acute medicine or emergency medicine behind you, or MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary, mention it, because it widens what we can put in front of you.
What you need in place
A licence to practise and full GMC registration, the right to work in the UK, six months minimum of recent hospital experience in the NHS or HSC, and experience at core training level or equivalent in a relevant specialty. Life support should be ALS in date, or ILS if you are willing to update. Then the usual clearances: occupational health and immunisations, two references we can contact, an enhanced DBS on the update service or one we arrange, and appraisal and revalidation up to date, where we can lend a hand.
Rates and travel
£45 to £55 an hour, depending on grade, shift and site, agreed before you take the booking and paid weekly. Doctors come to Bristol shifts from Bath and Weston Super Mare, and some cross the bridge from Newport, Cwmbran or Cardiff. Ad hoc, block bookings or a contract of a month or longer, whatever fits.
