Mental health units and beyond
Psychiatry is one of four areas where the demand is steady, along with general medicine, emergency medicine and surgery. If mental health units are where you are happiest, we look for work there. If you would rather mix it with ward cover or the emergency department, that is just as easy. Registrar and consultant support is in place on every shift, whichever unit you are on.
Grades we book
ST1, CT1 and CT2 doctors, plus those with equivalent experience. Psychiatry, emergency or acute medicine experience is useful, as is progress with Royal College exams such as MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary, though none of that is a condition.
The work itself
Clerking admissions and taking referrals on the acute take, reviewing and managing inpatients, ordering investigations and setting treatment plans, and doing the procedures you are competent in. You also back up foundation doctors on shift and play your part in nights and weekends on the on call rota, with records kept to a standard that would survive clinical or legal review.
The paperwork side
Full GMC registration and a licence to practise are essential, with six months or more of recent hospital experience in the NHS or HSC, core training level experience in a relevant specialty and the right to work in the UK. You will also need current advanced life support, or immediate life support and a willingness to update, an enhanced DBS on the update service (we can set one up), occupational health clearance and immunisations, two references we can contact and appraisal and revalidation in date. Our team helps with revalidation and chases the rest of the compliance file for you.
Money and getting started
Rates run from £45 to £55 an hour, agreed before you accept, and paid weekly. Commuting in from Leeds, Wakefield or over the Pennines from Rochdale or Oldham is common for the doctors we place here. Apply on the site with a CV and your GMC number and we call back that working day.
