From Ballymena it is a short drive to Antrim, and from Belfast or Lisburn not a great deal longer. That matters to us, because we match every doctor to work close to home by postcode and travel time, and for an SHO based anywhere around the Northern Trust area, Antrim is an obvious place to start the conversation.
The grade, and the specialties asking for it
We are recruiting SHO grade doctors, core trainees included, along with doctors who have equivalent experience. Acute rotas in Northern Ireland depend on capable SHOs, and the call for them is constant in general medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry. You could take ad hoc shifts, a block booking or a longer locum contract.
How much you run yourself
You work with an appropriate degree of autonomy on medical and surgical wards, assessment units, emergency departments and mental health units. Expect to take referrals and clerk the acute take, manage inpatients and start their investigations and treatment, do procedures within your competence and supervise foundation colleagues. When something needs escalating you liaise with the registrar or consultant. Nights and weekends are part of the on call rota.
The paperwork
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise, the right to work in the UK, at least six months of recent NHS or HSC hospital experience and core training level experience in a relevant specialty are essential. So are advanced life support, or immediate life support with a willingness to update, plus occupational health clearance, immunisations and references. We arrange your Enhanced AccessNI Disclosure, and we support appraisal and revalidation. Royal College exam progress such as MRCP Part 1 or MRCEM Primary, ATLS or APLS, and familiarity with Encompass would all help.
Pay on file
The rate is £45 to £55 an hour and you are paid weekly, without chasing timesheets. Your background check is confirmed before every booking.
