Flamingo Workforce
Part of being an FY2 is having FY1s and medical students turn to you mid shift with a question. Around Newry, our locum foundation doctors do plenty of that teaching while still learning themselves, with seniors on hand above them.
Learning and teaching at once
You work under senior supervision while supporting the doctors and students a year or two behind you. Where a placement allows, there may be audit or clinical governance to contribute to as well. It is good experience to talk about at appraisal, and we support appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training so none of it gets lost.
Day to day
Shifts are in emergency departments, acute medical and surgical assessment units, inpatient wards and out of hours. You will see acute presentations, hold the ward bleep and work out which reviews go first. Procedures get more independent as you gain experience. When a patient is getting worse, you act and escalate straight away. Finish with clear notes and a safe handover.
To be considered
Hold full GMC registration and a licence to practise, have Foundation Year 1 behind you and around six months of recent hospital experience in the UK or Ireland. Immediate life support is required, advanced life support is preferred, and you need the right to work in the UK. Experience in emergency or acute medicine and use of Encompass or a similar record system are both welcome.
Hours, money, paperwork
Days, twilights, nights or weekends, booked ad hoc, in blocks or as a longer locum contract, with immediate and short notice starts possible. You earn £45 to £55 an hour, agreed in advance and paid every week. We take care of the Enhanced AccessNI Disclosure, occupational health and immunisations, and references.
