This one is for the FY2 who wants more time in the emergency department or acute medicine before deciding what comes next. Around Lisburn and the South Eastern Trust area, we book foundation doctors into exactly those settings, and we try to match you to the specialty you want more exposure to.
Emergency and acute work
Emergency departments and acute medical and surgical assessment units are where acute presentations come in fast. Under senior supervision, you assess and manage them, decide which patient needs you first and escalate quickly when someone deteriorates. Practical procedures get more independent with each shift. Ward and out of hours bookings are also available, with the ward bleep and a list of reviews to prioritise. Good documentation and safe handover are expected, and FY1s and medical students will sometimes need your help.
Does your experience fit?
You need full GMC registration with a licence to practise, Foundation Year 1 completed and around six months of recent hospital work in the UK or Ireland. ILS is required; ALS is desirable and particularly useful in emergency settings. The right to work in the UK is needed too. Earlier emergency or acute medicine time is an advantage, and so is knowing Encompass or another hospital record system.
Checks and support
We arrange your Enhanced AccessNI Disclosure, occupational health with immunisations, and references from recent employment. Appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training support is part of what we offer.
Hours and rate
Days, twilights, nights and weekends; ad hoc, block bookings or longer locum contracts; immediate or short notice starts. The rate is £45 to £55 an hour, confirmed before every booking and paid weekly.
