The bleep goes and a patient on the ward is going downhill. As an FY2 locum in Derry, you are the first doctor there: you assess, start treatment, call the senior early and write it up properly. That moment, and the handover at the end of the night, is what this work turns on.
Escalate early, hand over well
Senior supervision is there on every shift, and using it promptly is part of the job, not a sign of weakness. You will assess acute presentations, prioritise a list of ward reviews, perform practical procedures with growing independence and keep documentation accurate. Safe handover is expected every time. FY1s and medical students may be on the same shift, and helping them is part of what an FY2 does. Audit and governance work turns up on some placements.
Departments
Emergency departments, acute medical and surgical assessment units, inpatient wards and out of hours cover across the five Health and Social Care Trusts. If there is a specialty you would like more of, say so and we will look for it.
Your registration and experience
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise, FY1 signed off, and around six months of recent hospital experience in the UK or Ireland. ILS must be current, and ALS is a welcome extra. You need the right to work in the UK. Emergency medicine or acute medicine experience and knowledge of Encompass or a comparable record system will stand you in good stead.
Pattern, pay and paperwork
Work days, twilights, nights or weekends as ad hoc shifts, blocks or longer locum contracts, starting immediately or at short notice. Rates are £45 to £55 an hour, confirmed before each booking and paid weekly. We arrange your Enhanced AccessNI Disclosure, occupational health and immunisations, and references, and we can support appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training.
The North West
From Derry, shifts towards Coleraine, Omagh, Dungannon, Ballymena or Enniskillen are possible, matched by postcode and travel time. Flamingo Workforce places doctors from FY1 up to consultant. Apply on the site and we will get back to you.
