Flamingo workforce

Plenty of FY2 doctors wonder whether locum work is a good way to find out which specialty they actually want. Around Ballymena it can be, because we will try to match you with the specialty you want more exposure to, whether that is the emergency department, acute medicine or somewhere else.

Trying a specialty on

Shifts cover emergency departments, acute medical and surgical assessment units, inpatient wards and out of hours work, all with senior supervision. You get real responsibility: assessing acute presentations, carrying the ward bleep, sorting your reviews by priority, doing procedures with more independence each time and escalating a deteriorating patient without waiting. You will hand over safely, write clear notes and support FY1 colleagues and medical students, and where a placement allows you can join audit or governance work.

Fitting it around you

Days, twilights, nights, weekends: choose the pattern. Ad hoc shifts, block bookings and longer locum contracts are on offer, and starts can be immediate or at short notice. Pay is £45 to £55 an hour, confirmed before each booking and paid weekly.

What we need from you

You should hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise, have finished Foundation Year 1 and have roughly six months of recent hospital experience in the UK or Ireland. ILS is required and ALS preferred. You also need the right to work in the UK, occupational health clearance with the right immunisations, and recent references. Knowing Encompass or another hospital record system is useful.

The admin side

We arrange the Enhanced AccessNI Disclosure and look after occupational health and references. Appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training support is there too. Flamingo Workforce is a specialist healthcare, social care and corporate recruiter covering doctors from FY1 to consultant across the five Health and Social Care Trusts.

Ballymena and beyond

Ballymena sits in the Northern Trust area, with Antrim, Belfast, Coleraine, Lisburn and Craigavon all in reach, and we match by postcode and travel time. Apply through the site to start.
