Support Worker, Castle Cary

Flamingo Workforce

A small residential home in Castle Cary, Somerset, is taking on support workers for its day team. It is a permanent post, employed directly by the care provider, and Flamingo Workforce is handling the recruitment for them.

Who lives there

The home supports a handful of adults with learning disabilities and autism, some with mental health conditions or difficulty communicating. At times people express distress through behaviour that others find challenging. What helps most is a calm manner and patience, along with knowing each person well enough to spot what they need before things build up.

Your shifts

Days run from 7am to 2.30pm or from 2.30pm to 10pm. Weekend work is part of the rota. Most of the day is spent on ordinary life, helping with personal care, meals and routines, and coaching people in cooking, budgeting and the confidence to try new things. You will work alongside families and visiting professionals as well as the rest of the staff.

Pay

£14.25 an hour if you have less than a year in a similar setting, rising to £14.75 an hour once you have twelve months or more. Similar here means health or social care work supporting people with complex needs, autism or behaviour that challenges.

What else comes with the job

New starters get a proper induction with face to face training, online modules and shadowing before working alone. Positive Behaviour Support training is provided, so PBS knowledge helps but you do not need it on day one. The provider pays up to £300 for referring someone who joins, a £125 bonus each time the home is graded Good by CQC (£250 for Outstanding) and long service awards from £100 at five years up to £1,000 at twenty. Staff also get Blue Light Card discounts and a confidential support line that is open day and night.

Before you apply

Because of the level of need in the home, you must already have care experience that includes supporting people whose behaviour can challenge. You will need the right to work in the UK and an enhanced DBS check. If you have a conviction, mention it when you apply; anything that does not put vulnerable people at risk can be talked through.

Apply through our website and we will come back to you about next steps.
